The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6: The Final Chapter Arrives April 8, 2025
The Handmaid’s Tale is returning for its sixth and final season, set to premiere on April 8, 2025 on Hulu.
The series is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, and is set in a totalitarian society where women are oppressed and forced to bear children for the ruling class.
Production on the final season began in September 2024, with Elisabeth Moss reprising her lead role as June Osborne.
Familiar cast members Yvonne Strahovski (Serena Joy), Bradley Whitford (Commander Joseph Lawrence), and Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia) will also return. Additionally, Josh Charles will join the cast as a new character.
Although the hype around Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale gradually faded as time went on, the show’s final season looks like it’s going to be a sobering and timely reminder of what made Margaret Atwood’s story so powerful in the first place.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 (2025)
Although June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) seemed ready to put Gilead behind her in The Handmaid’s Tale’s season 5 finale, a new trailer for the show’s sixth season finds her back in the belly of the beast quietly rallying other women to strike back at their Christofascist oppressors. While Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) don’t seem to know exactly how June plans to destroy everything they’ve built, they can feel that there’s a new subversive energy coursing through Gilead’s population of subjugated handmaids.
That doesn’t appear to be an immediate concern for Commander Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) as he achieves a new level of power within Gilead. But the trailer’s shots of handmaids arming themselves with switchblades makes it seem like they’re way past ready to burn everything down if that’s what it takes to be free.
When The Handmaid’s Tale first premiered in 2017, it seemed so dystopian that it was easy for some to dismiss it as pure speculative fiction. But given the ongoing push to further limit women’s access to healthcare reproductive in the US, the show is probably going to feel that like even more of a plausible vision of the future when it returns on April 8th.
The Handmaid’s Tale is produced by MGM Television. The 6th season will have a total of 10 episodes, Season 6 is executive produced by Bruce Miller, Warren Littlefield, Tuchman, Chang, Moss, Sheila Hockin, John Weber, Frank Siracua, Steve Stark, Kim Todd, Daniel Wilson and Fran Sears.
Under his direction, the Red Robed Handmaids will arrive in Gilead on April 8, with a three-episode debut followed by a weekly drop. The series finale will stream on May 27, 2025.
Fans can expect a dramatic and emotional conclusion to the story of struggle and hope in the world of Gilead.
